Justice Qazi Faez Isa has been appointed the new Chief Justice of Pakistan with effect from September 17, 2023. He took oath as the 29th Chief Justice of Pakistan at a ceremony at Aiwan-i-Sadr Justice. President Arif Alvi administered oath to Qazi Faez Isa. His first act as the CJP was to form a full court to hear challenges to the law clipping the top judge’s powers.

Who is Justice Qazi Faez Isa?

Justice Qazi Faez Isa is the 29th Chief Justice of Pakistan since September 17, 2023. He served as the Chief Justice of the Balochistan High Court from 2009 to 2014 and became a Supreme Court justice in 2014. Born on October 26, 1959, in Quetta, his family has a rich activism and public service history. His term as Chief Justice is set to continue until October 25, 2024, after which Ijazul Ahsan will succeed him based on seniority. Justice Isa’s family has a diverse heritage, with roots in Hazara, Baluchistan, and Karachi. His father, Qazi Muhammad Isa, was a prominent figure in the Pakistan Movement, serving as the president of the All-India Muslim League’s Balochistan chapter and representing Balochistan in the 1940 Lahore Resolution. Education-wise, Justice Isa completed his primary and secondary education in Quetta, pursued “O” and “A” levels at Karachi Grammar School, and obtained a B.A. (Honours) in Law in London. He also passed the Bar professional examination at the Inns of Court School of Law, London, and was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1982.
